Online Literary Circles

Teaching & Learning in Digital Environments

I actually took this class in the spring of 2012. It was my first class in my move towards my school library endorsement. At the time, I was still teaching high school English. While I had been using some technology in my classroom already, this class opened my eyes to many new possibilities. The world of digital environments has only grown since then.

Digital Citizenship at Burke

Digital Citizenship

In this class, we looked at many of the laws and policies involved in keeping students safe online. This video is a reflection of what I learned as well as a tool that could be shared with others to help them understand. This assignment really forced me to articulate what I had learned in the class and how it applies to the community I support. I now have a better understanding of the actual laws that affect what digital tools are used in the classroom and which ones shouldn't be.

Share Your Story with StoryCorps

Digital Citizenship

This infographic shares an in-depth look at the the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy of the StoryCorps app and website and examines how those affect safe usage in the classroom. It is quick and easy to read so that educators can make an appropriate decision about whether or not to use this resource. I had never really looked at the legalese behind apps before. There is a lot I didn't know before taking this class. Not only am I now looking at this information for use of digital tools in my role as an educator, but I am also looking more carefully at the apps my own children are using.

How to Do Research

Online Teaching and Learning

This was a project I developed that I could use with students in my role as a school librarian. It includes both synchronous and asynchronous lessons so that it could be taught in a remote, hybrid, or in-person setting. While I have used elements of this unit, I have not had the opportunity to use it as a whole unit yet. I had never written a lesson plan in a format like this before. I really like how it lays everything out in an easy-to-read format that is easily accessible for administrators and students to understand the expectations.

Watch Me, Watch Me!

Technology in Creativity and Critical Thinking

This is a presentation that could be used in many settings and at many levels. I have not yet used it, but I hope to someday. It looks at the apps: Shadow Puppet Edu, Adobe Spark Video, and Apple Clips and demonstrates how they could be used in classroom projects. Working on this project encouraged me to look at many new apps and to critically examine and compare them.

Visual Poetry Lesson Plan

Technology for Diverse Learners

This was a project in which I collaborated with an ELL teacher in my building to explore poetic devices and the use of various apps on the students' iPads. The results were really touching and, I believe, impactful for the students in that small class. I haven't had many opportunities to work with the ELL students in my building, but every time I have, it has been a positive experience. This was the longest and most in-depth collaboration I had done with these classes. It was really awesome to get to talk with some of these students and this project really encouraged them to share their stories. I hope I will be able to do it again sometime.

Everyone Can Create!

Technology with Diverse Learners

The goal of this presentation is to introduce educators to Apple's learning tool, "Everyone Can Create," and teach them how they can use this tool with their students. It really is what it says - everyone can create. It uses the principles of Universal Design for Learning to inspire students to create. This presentation walks teachers through how to use the tool and all of the options available to them so that they can start using it right away. I really enjoyed learning about this tool and can see numerous applications for it in classrooms. I learned how important it is to consider UDL when selecting digital tools to use with students.
I presented this presentation at the Nebraska Educational Technology Association (NETA) Spring Conference in 2023.
